"The Unabashed Celebration of the Bicycle"
March 21-24, 2002
Monterey, California

Storylines:

--Over 60,000 cyclists and spectators over 4 days of action

--The Mountain Cross was first built with a set of 43' doubles.
Cedric Gracia was the only rider to attempt them in practice, and MTBZONE.COM may have the only proof!! (see photos #1, #2)
...not even Brian Lopes, who had been complaining that the jumps weren't big enough at major races.

--Mike King Qualified 1st in Dual Slalom.
He also hit the last gate in the final run and crashed very hard. (watch for video soon) Mikey didn't race the Mountain Cross but he did get 11th in the downhill the next morning.

--Ann-Caroline Chausson bests all of the Semi-Pro men's times in downhill
Anne's time: 1:31.2
Semi-Pro winner- 1:31.3
Anne's Pro men's finish = 34th

--Sport/Expert downhillers wait in 2-3 hour shuttle lines for practice ..........Pro & Semi Pro wait 5-10 minutes

--Rain threatened all weekend, but never ruined any events
