King Of Bikes / North Shore Indoor Challenge
Vancouver, BC, Canada
February 15-16, 2002

photos by Randy Little, Eric Arnold, & Mike Albright

Format: 1 day of head-to-head BMX racing & 1 day of Mountain bikes; the best of both days is crowned "King Of Bikes"

Riders: Some of the best amateurs and pro riders from the Pacific Northwest, plus 2 top pro racers from the United States, John Purse and Robbie Miranda.

Venue: B.C. Place Stadium; a football sized stadium with plenty of room for an outdoor show.

The Dirt: Very dark, almost black, potting soil-type dirt. The kind with high manure content and lots of moisture, making for a soft, slow, surface that will not pack down.....solution: put as much plywood on the track as possible!

The Tracks:

BMX/MTB- An 'InVert' type course with a nice, steep start ramp. The jumps were fairly small, but proportioned for the size of the complete layout and dirt type. The first two corners each had 2 berms, so if you were inside in the first corner you rode outside the next berm. After the 2nd corner the courses combined until the finish.

North Shore- They utilized the BMX starting hill and first straight, but after that the course was filled with ladders, ramps, bridges, teeter-totters, and ended was a big drop off. The winner of the pro class was a 14 year old kid!! Check out videos for more North Shore action.

Who was hot?

John Purse
overcame an early loss (double elimination)to take the Pro BMX win on Saturday.

Robbie Miranda was unstoppable on his mountain bike Sunday, out-snapping everyone.

Danny Joyce didn't lose an amateur race all weekend long, riding his Redline Proline and Dually to the King Of Bikes crown.

Makara Martin was jumping everything with ease, putting many guy's egos to shame.

Canada's young guns Jordie Lunn, Tyson McCrea, & Tyler Clarke all rode impressively. Tyler had a chance to win the Pro BMX finals against John Purse.

Washington State riders Mike Albright, Bart McDaniel, & Casey Northern also rode very strong. Bart McDaniel placed 2nd overall and could have won it in the final MTB race against Robbie Miranda. Mike Albright (your webmaster) finished 5th both days (4th overall) riding strong against Tyler Clarke, Jordie Lunn, John Purse, and Tyson McCrea.
